Less than a ten-minute drive from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Grapevine, Texas, is home to two leading resort hotels, and both create incredibly special atmospheres for the winter holiday season. Here’s a peek at what the Gaylord Texan and the Great Wolf Lodge have planned for your family vacation during the holidays this year.
Family Holiday Festivities at the Gaylord Texan
The fourth annual “Lone Star Christmas” kicks off November 14, 2017 and runs through January 3, 2017 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center on Lake Grapevine. Visitors (both guests and the curious public) can stroll through the massive atrium of this large complex to marvel at the 1.2 million twinkling lights and 20 phenomenal seven-foot ornaments hanging from the top of the glass roof.
Other incredible Christmas decorations at the Gaylord Texan include 1,000 feet of model-train track with running trains, a life-size gingerbread house. and miscellaneous holiday displays created from a whopping 2,300 feet of garland, 5,600 wreaths, and 10,000 ornaments. Strolling entertainers include stilt walkers dressed up as toy soldiers, singing cowboys and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Simultaneously, visitors can purchase tickets to the “ICE!” exhibit at the Gaylord Texan. The 14,000-square-foot space is transformed into a winter wonderland made up of 2 million pounds of ice sculptures that are kept at 9 degrees. (Visitors don provided parkas for comfort.) Scenes include Old Man Winter blowing snow, dazzling ornaments made of colored ice, a winter forest, a life-size Santa lap, a giant angel, beautiful Nativity scene and super-fun ice slides. Tickets range from $10 to $23, depending on age of visitor and day of the week.
Finally, in conjunction with the city of Grapevine, the Gaylord Texan presents “The Magic of Christmas” performance on select dates between November 30 and December 21 at downtown Grapevine’s Palace Theatre. Frosty the Snowman and Santa’s elves star in this family-friendly show.
Family Festivities at the Great Wolf Lodge
At the Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor waterpark resort, the lobby is transformed into a Winter Wonderland every evening from November 28 through Christmas Day. Snow-making machines hidden in the rafters are turned on every night during story time, showering guests with “snowflakes.”
Nightly events at this resort (where entrance to the 80,000-square-foot indoor waterpark is included in your room rate) feature holiday-themed sing-a-longs and storytime at the lobby’s Great Clock Tower. In the activity-filled “Cub Club,” young guests can make special holiday crafts and cards in the days leading up to Christmas.
And for an ultra-special, family-friendly New Year’s Eve, special events include a festive buffet, karaoke, waterslide racing, DJs and dancing in the waterpark. For little ones who can stay awake until midnight, there’s a balloon drop to mark the beginning of the new year.
